Behind the Build

Powerful. Quiet. Controlled.

These characteristics accent the client in mind with the commissioned MOC. Delivered with custom rendered instructions and all the necessary parts, the MOC recipient had a great time creating this model.

As Atlas holds the world in his hands, carefully balanced over his shoulders, this model does the same with the point of attachment between the figure and the orb and the figure being his hands.

This model was created within three stages; the base, the figure, and the orb. I began with the orb as that was going to help set the scale. Once determining it's size, working through the addition of smooth tiled worn sections requiring a lot of reconstruction through my design process. Once set with a solid core, I set the base beneath the figure as that was going to be a similar size to the orb above his head. I wanted some additional detail within the plinth, and added columns into different corners along with other detail added by the use ingot tiles (part ID: 99563).

Finally it came to capturing Atlas himself. I wanted to orb to be balanced and held with only his hands. It was okay if it can rest on his shoulder blades, but I did not want any brick connection in that point. I began working backwards with the scale and setting the torso/chest assembly. The most crucial point became creating a rigid bend in the torso it does appear as if the figure is struggling, but not buckling from the actual weight of the model. Each of the other joints within the figure have the ability to move and be positioned. The model is small with each joint having little connections, for example a single stud holds each in position fully lifting the orb above his head.

Once completed, there really was an intentional balancing act that needed to be played with the orb. Success! That specific feature makes this one of my proudest commission builds.
